and a few dozen pics on the web.

we are legion now.
we are worldwide,
pereskiopsis growth is on the edge of critical mass.

this is nuts.
our TV system started acting up
about the time we put in the power LED lights
on the pereskiopsis grow system.
the TV would get mild static with the lights LED lights in full power.....

it got worse and worse and we would be losing channels........
we had to start phasing the lights or the whole TV system would drop off.

somehow , we realized a cable was semi blown...........
changing the cable solved the problem 100%

anyway , point of the story, for those using ALOT of LED lights,
they do cause some degree of interference .
with solid connecting, quality cables , they do not.

along with many of my readers, i follow anne halonium on the web.

my readers will also note from my blogs that,
peyotepink doesnt do forums.

i dont get to read annes various stuff all the time.
the other day i managed to "catch up"

anne halonium is one of the most innovative,
multi -bio / grower researchers growers on the planet.
the forums , however,
appear to be flooded with a large number of questionably skilled growers.

the major forums used to be haunts of some really intelligent growers.
i suspect that a critical mass of less experienced growers is causing an exodus
of the pros............

i have explained this to anne some time ago.
and its the reason peyotepink will never appear on a forum.
i believe the future is in micro blogs, where pros have a higher degree of editorial control.

there is alot of innovative bio info on the web from many sources.
info should be open source on the planets biodiversity.

in the new age, we shall see more organized web rings form for many bio hobbies.
i suspect the traditional info exchange patterns with forums, may be obsolete.

note the roots. we let this cup dry a few days . a sort of "pre -rooting"

im back, vacation at annes was madness.

um this one is dead..............went almost a yr though in hydro , seemed fine, spontaneously collapsed and died............
thats OK , if ya have a healthy hydro cactus garden , your cool with reserves.......
always plan to outrun losses , you will, but a fast moving hydro LED cactus garden is a whole different animal than a window shelf of natural sun cacti..........

anyway , "sudden death syndrome in pereskiopsis" , can usually be avoided with careful water and nutrients...............but still , even that, doesnt always work............

i woke up this morning filled with love............for my super power LED blue grow light!
this light is totally peyotepink approved...in 2 days, deep green color on the pereskiopsis and new buds at most cut tips!..............
this is a serious LED , designed specifically for cactus to my specs..............
i am very encouraged by more results than i expected at this point..........

anyway, the idea is to pretty much go 100% LED at this point.........
we already had mostly, using the CFL's for boosting power......you will note the 26 watt 6500k above in the pic........were using them now only as momentary "working" lights a few minits a day, also , they are good to reference color differences, as , now everything is essentially blue......

you will also note , we have some standard red/ blue panels as overhead.......yes they add red, but as you can see its a blue wash...........

all the rangers know over the yrs weve proved you can grow cactus galore under LED.
id say were the LED cactus experts globally right now................
and peeps , this light is different..........................
our power on the hydro cactus garden has been cut by 60% shifting to LED, and with the old lights results were good, i suspect were about the power equal of a 1k halide @ 1-2 meters over a 6x6 sq ft area!

the idea is this season, is ALOT of pereskiopsis trichocereus and coryphantha grafts!
we had to expand and amp up the lights.......it was a no choice thing, the LED's were a no brainer for low power and low heat..............
cactus can burn when ya amp the power with regular lights, we have discovered LED doesnt do that..........power up rangers.............

anyway.......
because the blue is soooooooo strong, were requesting a red 670 nm of similar power from "engineering"...............should be here soon enough..........

and no, not all photos from now on are going to be blue...........

yee- haw..........3 were made for testing on biologicals, and, donated to 3 growers for comparison.
these are not available commercially at this point..........

we suggest blue block safety glasses with all blue LED arrays..............

here at peyotepinks forestry service, we are rapidly approaching 3000 hits, you may be 3000, check the profile for the official count......

peeps,we are gonna assume that 3000 is the reasonably accurate number of pereskiopsis growers worldwide.......yes , some may have a single humble stick, others, plowing hectares to the horizon!

this is BIG...........a decade and a half ago , when we started our cactus grafting research, we estimated less than 50 pereskiopsis growers worldwide.........
and peeps, pereskiopsis was RARE........

now, they are easily available , more /less worldwide............id like to think that pereskiopsis growers are meeting the rising demand and averting shortages.

some LED pereskiopsis hydro updates..........
ok rangers, weve been using LED lighting on pereskiopsis for several yrs now.
we have an informed opinion now.....

some key findings.........
pereskiopsis likes LED lights.
pereskiopsis likes RED and BLUE LED lights RED/BLUE combos are good also.
more blue makes pereskiopsis leaves fatter, more red makes them skinnier.
grafts react the same way as the pereskiopsis to LED light.
as for intensity, more is good, and closer is better.
LED lights are indeed different than CFL and you can use both, however CFL can burn pereskiopsi and create heat..........LED watt for watt does seem better.

so close , powerful LED lights, surrounding the pereskiopsis works best , and we also think a 4:1 ratio blue red is best..........

as a standard water nutrient mix were using common miracle blue as directed.

IF one has enough close LED lights, of proper color, and , a quality nutrient hydro mix, water changed weekly, and, on a 16 hr a day light cycle , growth rates for pereskiopsis and grafts will approach the levels of outdoor or greenhouse growing, yr round................

rangers, LED is worth it, just think differently about it..........
keep them close, surround the pereskiopsis, use hydro, pack them in tall thin containers..........rotate grafts often , and create a cycle of , cut , root hydro, graft and de-graft, and you can expand a cactus garden in months that will amaze........

ok rangers, were back, pereskiopsis in PC cups with nutrient water under 490 nm blue LED........they also are under 2x 26W CFL 6400k........

these are just going to be simple hydro cups, change the water weekly, they may get rotated to a window or outside, i wanna see them under bright conditons and time the rooting.........

ok, so i still hate google and their 2 tier web plans, among other shady stuff.

what we are doing is putting about 4-5 pereskiopsis per cup, and letting them root under a 26 watt CFL.........i think this one is a 6500k.

ya i ghost around the forums......
am i a member? .....no , never have been a member of any of them.
ive been into the web since the dawn of time, ive seen ALL the forums.
do i have a favorite forum? .....no.

i feel the forums are cool , as they promote bio science in general.
sometimes i wonder about the info presented, but i mostly see this as a learning curve.
(i do have serious issues with the way the forums present scientific safety issues. i think there is way to much alchemy going on without safety glasses, tyvek suits, correct fire suppresion systems, and spark proof ventilation............)
i wont field many alchemy questions based on my strong views on bio science safety.

besides , peyotepink cant do everything, i have a life, my focus is pereskiopsis and trichocereus.

peyotepink never wants to discourage scientific enquiry.
i dont wanna even discourage bio science witchcraft.
im trying to encourage a greener awareness all around.
that said , i strongly believe that all peeps/rangers/ growers should access all types of info.
forums, industrial growers pages, scientific papers, etc.............

lighting about 10-14 hrs a day...............i dont use timers with CFL , i dont trust them for some reason..............

we all know that its tough to ship a pereskiopsis worldwide.
therefore , i suggest that peeps make every effort to help fellow countrymen.

peeps, theres a worldwide pereskiopsis shortage , and the number of rangers is increasing.
every last ranger needs to double up..........
sand and gravel buckets 50-50, , stock up, and plant em dense, at least 15-20 per bucket.
dont forget drain holes.
northern rangers can keep buckets outside till fall, then bring them in under a mighty CFL for the winter...........

grow baby grow............pereskiopsis are going worldwide for about 1$ an inch..........peeps what more incentive do ya need...............got a surplus, wanna trade? rangers are standing by.

its a good thing and all, but considering theres like 5000+ pereskiopsis growers worldwide.......

im astounded...................
note the 12 inch ruler. many are 3/4 inch plus diameter.

these are some of the biggest pereskiopsis i have seen ...........ever.
some spines 2 inches long...........nothing like a 3 meter pereskiopsis on an inch diameter stalk to get the day going like a lumberjack! some stalks exceeded the cut of heavy duty pruning shears.
glochids were a flying...........

the idea is to stake the stalks in a sand gravel mix after they season a few days.........

we took some fat pereskiopsis stumps about 6 inches tall and rooted them in straight sand.
soon we will graft trichocereus cuttings to these for a massive cactus cloning..........

a forest of bonsai pereskiopsis on sand, you will note the green nylon pads.
we put 1/2 pads cut long wise in a 1000 ml PP tub, then densely packed the pereskiopsis cuttings...........the nylons provide support and drainage..........then we filled them in with sand.
the sand were using now is the playground/ sandbox grade...........fert is 1/2 miracle for this.
these pereskiopsis are watered every 2 weeks with about 250 ml water/fert, by just splashing it all in at once.............they like it, it allows for a really dense display..........
light is an astonishing 26 watt 6500 CFL...............they like it.

we totally endorse growing pereskiopsis in hydro tubes..........
and we totally endorse grafting in tubes also.

10 inch pereskiopsis is best length.
fattest test tubes you can get.
max density is about 144 per foot under 42 watt CFL
best density is about 60-90 foot, because of cross shading.
use neem. cuts down on algae and mites.
CFL/LED combos work well, best light about 50 watts ft at 6-10 inches.
feel free to build custom racks for tubes.
change water every 2-3 weeks.
roots are delicate to touch, but tough when dried.
drying pout tubes once in a while is good.
water always like less than 1 inch.
10-10-10 fert combo works good , could go stronger, but be warned on algae and spontaneous death..........as in the pale greenies.........

be delicate on fert changes........measure stuff .

ok now were gonna do the dry grafting pics on the "trichocerues forestry service"blogs.
in the meantime were growing several buckets of pereskiopsis from test tube hydro to a sand and nylon substrate, so like stay tuned, just give us a few weeks to re-gear from hydro tubes to sand.........

oh , my take on the tube gardens ? i say do it, up to a point, id say a 40 tube garden for a novice on a window sill is good, id strongly think about plastic tubes, as glass is glass.
id have some experience in fertilizers, and a clean environment......but then were skirting a plant tissue culture domain......

bonsai pereskiopsis , its the route for sure, but youd have to baby each bastard, and having some large tube gardens, hmm , we will see..........

so , like yes hydro test tube gardening is good for rapid propagation of pereskiopsis indoors or outdoors..........pereskiopsis can last for yrs in water culture alone , and thrive.
its great for grafting...........light on water/ light on electric type of ornamental.

now some brief downsides.......expect some losses.
expect different types of growth depending on light and fert.
grafting any cactus is an imprecise art form.......
and if you have to er in a tube garden go dryer, not wetter..............

ok rangers, weve been showing you test tube pereskiopsis and hydro tube cacti in the past blogs.
now were gonna shift toward sand..........regular kids sandbox sand, the clean white stuff.
were gonna get that 50 lb bag , and build some polypropelene micro forests for CO2 gassing.
were still gonna do some tubes, but were gonna refine it some........keep tuned.
tubes are totally cool , but were gonna do a little more enviro adjustment, and they arent really geared for that.......

anyway the idea is , to shift the pereskiopsis forestry to sand for a number of reasons........
first, were gonna try and do some intelligent nutrient and hormone trials on pereskiopsis.
water culture alone is kinda tricky on nutrients........
second, we suspect sand substrate for pereskiopsis and grafts may allow for shorter pereskiopsis stalks, and may be more practical in some ways for micro grafting.
third, were going for the most practical methods.........
the tube foresting IS a good deal, were gonna refine it more, and post more on the subject,
we feel that we may be able to get even higher yields on sand with shorter stalks.
this will allow for better lighting penetration, and less wattage per foot.

the game is rangers, max pereskiopsis with min water/ min light /min hassel.
micro forestry means bad ass little forests on shelf that shrub.......
also,
rangers often mention algae, ya i see it , but, its not so much an issue on the scale im on.
sand may solve algae issues as a side benefit.

as always , were working on it.

yes rangers, its grim , here we have several pereskiopsis in stages of death.
you will lose a few when you use test tube pereskiopsis forest methods.
these represent about 1% of the tube forest over a 6 month period........

i dont fully understand why some die and some are fine. we have some pushing 2 yrs old.
avg lifespan is over 6 months. maybe 1 yr..., they can also be rooted in sand at any point if they are alive.....extending life for its usual lifespan in substrates

some things to consider...........let them dry out once in a while, dont over fertilize, and ,try not to injure the roots when watering.......also consider careful measurement of fert.......and water about every three weeks............never let them sit in more than an inch of water..........

thing is rangers, expect some casualties..........
now ,in practice in a test tube hydro forest, it works like this,
ya win some, ya lose some, but if ya loose more than 5-10% over a month period, think about what your doing.................1-3% per month is about avg.
replenish from your pereskiopsis bucket gardens............
the best size for cuttings is 6-10 inches for tube foresting, longer for pop bottles.

grafts that are on a dying pereskiopsis can be removed and dried a day or two, then put on sand and re-rooted with ease...........they can also be re grafted to a new pereskiopsis, sometimes this works really, really good.............

any degree of sense and the death rate should be low.........just be on guard for the
"pale greenies" (spooky music).

pereskiopsis on sand. sandbox is a polypropelene tub 8x8x2, these were just transplanted in the most undignified way , after having rooted in tubes over the last 6 months.
the sand we use is the type ya get in pet stores for reptiles..........
kinda steep $ for the avg ranger, but we are kinda rationing on it so,.........

if you will notice, roots are everywhere, when pereskiopsis is grown in hydro tube forests , roots fly...........
now that the pereskiopsis are in sand, and watered fairly well, were gonna let them slowly dry out for maybe a month or 2, and barely water..........what were going for is the sandbox forest.
then it will be cut down to a stump forest of pereskiopsis for grafting.
this yr as things develop, were gonna graft some micro forests of trichocereus, and , dig this aztekium......yes ,were gonna revive the aztekium forestry program.

ok rangers, dont think for one minit we have dropped the test tube cactus forests...............were actually building up the largest hydro test tube cacti graft garden ever!
were merely introducing sand as a side show and reconfiguring, as were expecting alot of seeds and grafts..............were gonna use the micro sand boxes as holding areas and rooting areas for the grafts and seedlings..........as i said, likely aztekiums.
the trichocereus stuff will be on the "trichocereus forestry service" blog, of course....

rangers, dont forget to review occasionally, and ,think about how your pereskiopsis grafting grow model works for you, do you have the outdoor forest? do you have the indoor tube garden?
strategy is everything........think your model thru, along with costs.
im teaching ya all pereskiopsis cultivation and nano- bio theory, show some imagination on the sing along, otherwise, ya all are gonna be lost when ya see the C02 fed rotating hydro drums using nylon substrate and using LED lights............( built for around 100$ your gonna love it, rack em rangers!) nasa take note on this shit , i think were only a launcher and a roman candle from terra forming mars with cacti.........

cacti in space.........terra forming mars.........im telling ya peeps ,ya want in on the ground floor.

on another note, mites, its sometimes an issue here............
NEEM, use as directed..........dont be lame, get some.
that said, certain strains of cacti seem to be resistant to mites, other types of cacti get swarmed.
this is apparent when cloning grafts..............be on the ball , mites are faster than a rush neem shipment.............
read up on NEEM, and shop around...........i have a favorite.............but, read and shop.
also , dont clone cacti that are mite havens...........some are resistant, it varies.
huge clone gardens of one genotype are not suggested by peyotepink.
vary your clones rangers, and some fresh seedlings.
the reason why i bring this up is, pereskiopsis and mites have a love affair, but mites dont bug pereskiopsis much...........forests of pereskiopsis in dense clusters, is a mite haven............
neem is harmless as directed on cacti.....and at weekly sprays, mites more less vanish.
we dont spray constantly. only as needed...................

hydro -aero-DWC pereskiopsis and roots........in this pic, 2 pereskiopsis per 60 ml polycarb bottle we made like a dozen like this, each uses about 20 ml water, changed about once a month, or, even let run dry.......these are somewhat ignored.........grown under LED and CFl about 30 watts ft........point is they take little care...........these are fine for grafting.

i keep telling all rangers theres a pereskiopsis shortage............the only way to get ahead of the curve is for all rangers to plan early for a massive 2010 grow season.
id like to see some agri tycoons............i know you dont live in montana, and, its not dental floss.......but...................

ok, so above we have hydro pereskiopsis in 50 ml polycarbonate nalgene bottles in a small rack.
the root shot is typical of the whole bunch. (PET is cheaper than polycarb, but not autoclavable.)
these are 100% CFL "daylights" at about 15 watts foot at about 12 inches distant.
the advantage here is flat bottomed bottles, the disadavantage space, here is about 16 pereskiopsis per rack.
if i double up on the test tubes, as opposed to bottles, i can get 72 in the same space.
the big diff is hassls in handling and density of grafts.....one must consider this in your peresekiopsis grow model.

if i had a small closet pereskiopsis graft forest, id definately go tubes in racks...........
if i had a garage for instance or a greenhouse, id go with pop bottles on bigger racks.
one must also consider electric if indoors...........
in these times conservation is key,
one must consider the more one spreads out indoors the more area, and hence the more power.

also peeps ,pereskiopis is NOT like "other " types of indoor growing, flat out ,ya dont need ALOT of light, i can see where rangers might use a MPH or HPS on a bottle garden in the garage, and ,on the surface it makes sense, but ,really rangers, a good closet and CFL and tube hydro could get ya much more mileage per $ spent. consider CFL for all your agri needs, or CFL /LED combo is best..............

dont understimate the CFL and the density of tubeage / bottle-age
as with all gardens , engineer it rangers, thinking is cheap and effective in gardening!

now a quick word about "outdoors" ya grow a forest outdoors! , but remember the following things.........GRAFTS ARE VERY SUSCEPTABLE TO PESTS OUTDOORS!
AND, IF YOU BRING IN OUTSIDE PERESKIOPSIS YOU RISK PESTS!

rangers, one word on this...............NEEM...........use as directed, and also, dont get carried away.
in hydro it might spike the nutrient value takeup, show some caution, a light spray about every 2 weeks is good..................

ok, beyond that, stay tuned, its the holidays, so, like i have a life........this is a good time of yr to build up agri supplys for pereskiopsis foresting, a bottle drive this time of yr is not only effective, but very enviro chic, also in the holiday rush one can often find CFL's on sale in multi packs, and ive been seeing LED xmas lights, im sure well give those a whirl at some point.........
got a cool idea on that, just waiting to pounce when prices collapse after xmas.

pereskiopsis lighting update CFL / LED

ok rangers, alot of the fan mail asks about pereskiopsis and LED lights, yes they work good, and, often i photograph with the LED lights, i also use CFL ...........

now peeps, in LED world there are alot of variations, not all LED are equal.
lets assume ya have the common 1x1 144 or so LED , red/ blue grow combos.
yes they work, run them 20 hours a day about 7-10 inches from the tops.....
side lighting is good..........rotate your test tube hydro cacti often.
depending on your red /blue ratio you might have some elongation...........
i like alot of blue.........but peeps , read up about BLUE LIGHT HAZARDS FIRST!
you were warned...........
LED science is still kinda new, its an experimental thing...........peyotepink is a nut.

now , peyotepink recommends THIS , use LED AND CFL IN COMBO.

its the way to go on pereskiopis cultivation, this is what ya do, set up your pereskiopsis grow, then get LED red/ blue. or just plain red or just plain blue LED, rig them so they hang about 1 foot to 2 feet above your pereskiopsis hydro garden.
THEN add a CFL about the same height, get a cool daylight one , figure 15 -25 watts per panel.........so if you have 2 LED panels , and 1 CFL lets say ,45 watt? that, at about 16 inches height, will do a 2x2 garden.........maybe a little bigger, this is at least 200 tubes, but your mileage will vary, and the watts total, about 70...........fans extra of course.

if i was gonna do a massive pop bottle garden on racks id use 40 -60 watt CFL at 1 foot above the tops...........

so peyotepink says use LED and CFL...........

pereskiopsis hydro roots / bottle forest under CFL

this bottle forest is from fat pereskiopsis cuttings about 45 days old.
these were grown under CFL 26 watt at about foot distance from the light.
instead of the usual test tube cacti/ pereskiopsis, these are in polycarbonate 50 ml nalgene containers;
peyotepink has a bad love affair with nalgene..........
anyway , these take about 10 -15 mls of water, then i just let them slowly dry out.
once again they seem to thrive in the slow dry out cycle.............
how long can they dry? who knows so far, id say a month is a reasonable guess.
i wouldnt go more than 3-5 days though unless ya wanna hibernate them.

pereskiopsis will also kinda semi hibernate based on light too.............
something to think about .

ok , so the pereskiopsis root, youll notice they can get big, this is good, good roots good grafts.
i suspect the dry wet cycle gets em rootier...........also, the water doesnt have to be deep. or " fucked with" they seem like they actually like small puddles of slowly drying still waters.
yes peeps you can use aero bubbling, but why? they like the dead puddle better!
dont make it complex rangers, it looks all science-y here at our research facility, but one could get an outrageous farm going with recycle-able raid on a dumpster.
pereskiopsis forestry is intended to be low tech/ high output by nature, and simple.

algae? yes ya might see it, using clean techniques cuts it down dramatically, but really, i figure some get algae some dont...............when i get algae i just change the water a little more, our tap water here on the island has a zesty chlorination that thins algae, yet the perskiopsis doesnt mind...........your mileage may vary................

healthy hydro test tube forest about 60 days from cutting...these are under 49 w CFL
this batch i only change water about every 3 weeks, and sometimes they run dry..........

now some updates......."red ranger" one of our most industrious pereskiopsis researchers,
has been using this thing called an "easy cloner" ........see the link................
it looks pretty cool............im considering trying it out myself.
his whole site is full of extreme gardening..........

in other news were gonna try and re double our efforts, i know its been slow a while , but contrary to popular belief, i have a life.

the microscopes and computers are set up for the pereskiopsis micro grafting and micro photos
its comming............
we also had a temp set back with the trichocereus seeds.............they were pry stale.
were about grafting and offsets and cloning anyway............but it does slow down the "trichocerues forestry service"

now, a note on LED lights, peeps are into them, and they are cool, and they are low electric.
after 5 yrs of pereskiopsis under every combo of light i can imagine, ive come to the conclsuion that CFL is best.........about 25- 30 watts a foot.........LED is best as fill lighting, or extended time lighting, or for tough spots, or as a color booster , the more powerfull the LED the better.

LED is good, and can be used alone, and is really good with the use of mylar, and can be put inches from the crop...........but ultimatly , upon observation, CFL gives the most dramatic growth, CFL with LED blue or LED blue / red combos may do marginally better.

on nutrients, i fall back on liquid 10-10-10, as directed, but lately ive been increasing by 10%

a good rule of thumb is darker fall back slowly on nutrients, brighter green add slowly.

also on the tubes folks, if they dry out a day or 2 once in a while they seem to like it.
over water or more than 10ml per tube and they can spontaneously die.

wich brings me to another issue
peeps , pereskiopsis sometimes die........
if ya stick to the basics on the grow , you will lose some.
i keep about 10 buckets shrubbing outside that i take cuttings off of for experiments.
a good bucket garden is a must.
the early blogs explain bucket garden pereskiopsis.
anyhow , the idea is to outgrow the small losses............

todays forester lessons are..........
grow alot in buckets.
use CFL or CFL and LED......... LED alone is tricky
go slow on fert changes.............
expect a few casualties.............
and , use some imagination on the hydro possibilities.............

what we have here is an experiment we started a few months ago.
we took some 100 ml PP test tubes and chopped them off about 1.5 inches high.
after racking the tubes we started putting 5 ml of water in each one and cuttings ranging from 1-3 inches in each one, most took root as you can see............

now rangers, i use alot of exotic contianers with my hydro pereskiopsis, but, i still say one of the best models for alot of pereskiopsis would be plastic pop bottles on plastic racks under HPS...............

im still getting various indicators that a worldwide perskiopsis shortage is building......
peeps NOW is the time to quadruple efforts.

i say all rangers pledge to have 500 or more 1.5 foot stalks by next yr this time!
thats the point of todays lesson, pereskiopsis cuttings even 1 inch can be rooted.

anyway rangers, we have about 5000 trichocereus seeds were working on , and ,then graft.
pics of the seedlings in a few days.......its gonna be big.

winter is always a time for rangers to re gear on things, its time for the indoor grow season,

attention pereskiopsis forestry service rangers.............
im getting more and more indicators there is an impending pereskiopsis shortage.
it seems that the combo of new foresters and a lag in established forest production, along with customs impediments, has clipped the world availabilty.

rangers, every available acre of land and all closets need to be brought to bear on this thorny lack of material...........

review the blogs , get the idea, i know alot of rangers are on a budget, this is how ya get past that! its called grow and share capitolism!

every ranger must pledge a 3 sq meter forest within the next yr.........
also every ranger must pledge to train two new foresters!
if we do this , assuming the rate of new growers, and the rate of growth for pereskiopsis, and allowing for temp and climate, i figure around the 2 yr mark we could have a planetary pereskiopsis boom!

the rare cacti of the world and biodiversity are depending on us.

fat pereskiopsis secrets for tube hydro grafting

alot of rangers like fat pereskiopsis.
obesity depends on several things.

first of all . grow your buckets outdoors, or if indoors, in a stiff wind.
move them around, and shake them a little every few days.
pereskiopsis responds to branch movement by getting thicker to support upward growth.

fertilizer , fast drained soil also help.

light intensity , they can take ALOT of light.
redder shift on light color makes them long skinner and brighter green, bluer shift means shorter and darker..............the blue LED panels i got on the web/ online auction.
i commonly use CFL and LED lights, the blue LED boosts the blue end of the spectrum amd promotes the fatter dark green, it also makes grafts fatter.
and it uses low power on lights.

usually i grow an outside patch of about 2 dozen buckets with about 12 in each bucket.
those get fairly fat on their own from conditions, then i make cuttings and re-root in tubes.

when indoors on rockwool, i shake the racks 2-3 times a week and get them swaying.

many of the secrets of bonsai will work to make thick stems..............

one must ask to a certain degree "why" ?
ive discovered small stems are exellent for seedlings, and , they will get larger than ya think . , one thing about pereskiopsis, it does have its limits.
grafts can achieve sizes of a large golfball on a standard pereskiopsis.............beyond that size ,
i would consider the realitys of it all. pereskiopsis is cheap and fast, id price some barrel cactus.

if ya think "fat is the answer".........my thinking has always been if one is forward thining, one would graft alot of trichocereus first ( see sister blog "trichocereus forestry service")
in theory one could generate alot of pickle sized tirchocerus on pereskiopsis then re root the trichoceri on racks , then graft out, some of the euros are into myrtillocactus geometrizens.

there are close relatives of pereskiopsis that are almost as fast and somewhat fatter.
im all about pereskiopsis , but id be willing to co host reports on pereskiopis relatives.

anyway rangers, dont get bored , we have alot of projects planned and some new interesting info, also anne halonuim is working on a new grafting photo essay..................we will keep you informed...........................
